"Cruising The Caribbean" - Sailing the Leeward Islands

Once back in good old St. Marten, we had a very quiet and relaxing new year, called relatives back home, and got up to date on email. We spend 2 weeks stocking up the boat, eating excellent French pastries in Marigot, (hence getting fat(ter?) and generally goofing around waiting for our next visitors. This new "Charter Family", the captain's sister, husband and son, arrived on January 11th. The first week was spent touring the British Virgins (Again), as no one should come to the region for a first time and not experience such beauty. We have already covered the BVI's, so there will be no related pics on this page, unless they are exceptional or fun. They can be seen on previous "Cruising The Caribbean" pages. On Thursday 20th. January, we experienced our first night sail, we left from Manchaneel Bay in the BVIs and headed for Nevis. We arrived at 9am. on the 21st. and anchored at Pinney's beach. We spent 3 nights in Nevis, as we just love the beach. Ian had a birthday on the 22nd. We had a great nosh, and fun was had by all. On Monday 24th, we set sail for Antigua, where we anchored in English Harbour.  On the 26th, we set sail again, this time for the French Island of Guadeloupe.  We anchored off of the town of Deshais. After just one night we were off again Island hopping, this time to the quaint little Islands off Guadeloupe called the Saints, we visited a small French settlement called Bourg-Des-Saintes. On 29th. we upped anchor again and were off to Dominca. We spent 2 nights in Portsmouth in Dominica, while we were there we did a splendid Indian River tour and generally lazed about. It was the opening of Carnival so we spent some time enjoying ourselves with the locals. On the 31st. we headed back to Guadeloupe and anchored off the town of Deshaies. On February 1st. we upped anchor again and headed back to Jolly Harbor in Antigua. Along the way, between our stops, we saw the desolated Island of Montserrat, the best view from Guadeloupe to Antigua where the weather was perfect, and the smoldering volcano was in full view. In addition we saw hump back whales heading north. Unfortunately it was very hard to get photos as they only pop up for air for a very short while. By the time we see the spouts and run for the cameras, they have dived back into the 3000 + feet depths. On February 2nd we left Jolly Harbor we proceeded up the coast to Deep Bay for a quiet time swimming on the beautiful beach. January 3rd. found us in Barbuda at Palmetto Point Beach. Barbuda is very flat and the beach goes on for miles. On the 4th. we set off for St. Barths, arriving at Gustavia Harbor at around 2pm. The Sea and swells were so bad that anchoring was impossible, so we decided to plod on to Simpson Bay St. Maarten, arriving at 5:30pm. "Beer O'Clock".

Well that is all for now. We are back at St. Maarten ... again. Why do we always spend so much time here you may ask? Well it is a duty free port, that means provisions are cheaper than elsewhere, and Grog (Booze, Liquor, Beer etc.) is cheap.  Does $5.95 US for a 1 Litre bottle of Absolute Vodka answer the question?

Some photos of our travels around the Islands.
