"Cruising The Caribbean" - Sailing the UK, US & Spanish Virgin Islands

We spent two weeks in Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola in the UK Virgins "waking the boat up", cleaning it all after the summer storage, and installing the new Chart Plotter and Radar system. On December 3rd. we set sail for St. John in the US Virgins, anchoring in Caneel Bay, and visiting Cruz Bay. December 4th. we pottered around to Maho Bay, then on to Leinster Bay on December 5th. Next, we went on to visit Princess Bay on the south coast, anchoring at Round Bay. On December 8th., after an early start we sailed along to the Island of Culebra in the Spanish Virgin Islands. We anchored off the town of Dewey in a bay called Ensenada Honda. We went ashore here for a nice Puerto Rican meal at Mamacita's Paradise. We also took a local taxi to Flamenco Beach, perfect white sand and beautiful blue waters welcomed us. On December 10th. we set off to another Spanish Virgin Island called Vieques where we anchored in Salina Del Sur. Beautiful beaches, but the landscape was littered with destroyed tanks, and personnel vehicles, as it used to an US Navy training area. Signs warning of unexploded bombs etc. lined the beach. December 11th. off we sailed to another Ensenada Honda, on a different Island this time though. We were the only boat at this anchorage, that was very pleasant and made for a very peaceful stay. Lots of Jelly Fish though, so no swimming. December 13th. (Brenda's Birthday) we anchored at the small bay of Puerto-Ferro. This bay was quite special as at night the water glows at this time of year with Bioluminescenct algae. Brenda of course was thrilled, and when it was dark leapt in, and splashed about in the shimmering water. Next day, we headed of to the small town of Esperanza, and anchored in the beautiful Sun Bay, white sand and palm trees for miles. December 15th. we said goodbye to Vieques and headed back to Culebra, anchoring at Bahia Almodovar on the west coast. The waters were crystal clear, and the snorkeling excellent. Next day it was back to Dewey to provision the boat. December 17th, we headed for the US Virgins again, and a lovely spot called Honeymoon Bay, near Charlotte Amalie, on St. Thomas. December 19th. took us to Christmas Cove, once again crystal clear waters. December 20th., it was off to Road Town in the UK Virgins to get some work done on the boat, the water maker was leaking, and you always need water when at sea. December 21st. we got some provisions, and headed off to Marina Cay for the evening. December 22nd. we arrived at North Sound Virgin Gorda. This is where we spent Xmas, drinking Rum Punches and watching all the Mega Yachts, go by. Brenda made a great Xmas dinner complete with Champagne. We ventured by dinghy to The Bitter End Yacht club to watch the Xmas parade. Next day we went to Leverick Bay, where we took a Taxi to Spanish Town for provisions. This was especially exciting as we literally bumped into Morgan Freeman the actor, one of Brenda's favorites. He was very gracious and more than happy to pose for pictures. December 28th. after a really early start we sailed off to St. Maarten. We made good time and anchored in Marigot bay. We will be spending the New year in St. Maarten, plus an extra week. On January 9th. The Captain's (Ross') sister and family will be joining us for a month sail down Island to the Grenadines, working our way back to St. Maarten and the UK Virgins again.

Well that is all for now. We are back at St. Maarten. We wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year.

Some photos of our travels around the Islands.
